Growing your own vegetables to increase your vitamin intake

There was a time when people grew their own fruits and vegetables. However, as time went on, more and more people shifted to buying their foods rather than growing them. While it definitely saves you a lot of time and effort, you have to compromise on the quality of food you eat.

This is one of the major reasons why quite a few people have started to grow their own foods in their own backyards. The food that you buy from the supermarket has its own risks. Firstly, you have no idea where the food is coming from. Add to that the harmful chemicals that are used on farms these days and you end up with something that may be more harmful rather than nutritious.

You will also need to consider soil depletion. Soil needs to be rich in some key nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, copper, potassium, and zinc. If the soil is low in these nutrients, the resultant food will also be low in these minerals and the vitamins that you do consume will not get absorbed appropriately.

Loss of vitamins during storage is another factor why you should consider growing your own vegetables. After being harvested, these foods may take days and even months to finally reach you. This means that these are not as fresh as the sellers claim them to be and they definitely are low in vitamins than freshly harvested food. Take for instance, potatoes. Storage leads to fifty percent depletion in the vitamin C content of these foods.

If you want to increase vitamin B and C in your diet, then you should grow your own vegetables. You can grow many of the health foods sold in the market these days such as barley grass. The juice of this grass increases your concentration and increases your energy. If you grow it yourself and juice it soon after harvesting, you will be taking in more vitamins than in store-bought form.

You may even want to grow your own chlorella or spirulina which are rich sources of vitamin C, rather than take vitamin C capsules. However, with these algae you need to exercise much more caution since these may very well grow into something that not right to be eaten. For instance, if the water in which you grow your algae is polluted or contains heavy metals, it may not be right for you. This is why it may be better to consume these vitamin-rich foods in the form of supplements.

So, if you want to increase your vitamin consumption, whether it is B vitamins or vitamin C, you should think about growing as many vegetables in your home as possible to avoid vitamin deficiency.
